About Barrington

The exterior of Barrington Elementary School, with the front door facing Barrington Road

Barrington Elementary School was Upper Arlington’s second permanent school building, built in 1939. Today, it serves more than 750 students in kindergarten through grade 5.

Barrington offers the Upper Arlington Schools K-5 elementary curriculum and the alternative informal / progressive instructional program to students living within the Barrington attendance area — approximately bounded by Lane Avenue on the north, North Star Road on the east, King and Fifth Avenues on the south, and Route 33 (Riverside Drive) on the west.

Upon completion of Barrington Elementary School, students attend Jones Middle School.

Facilities Master Planning at Barrington Elementary School

In recent years, Barrington Elementary School has undergone significant renovations and new construction. Part of the first phase of the community-developed master plan for Upper Arlington’s schools, every elementary school in our district is either completely new or fully renovated and includes needed space for the district’s growing enrollment.

The Barrington project, completed for the start of the 2021-2022 school year, features:

  • A new addition totaling 22,824 square feet of learning space and a bright and centralized two-story media center that opens to an outdoor learning courtyard

  • Six learning neighborhoods featuring 36 flexible classroom spaces in all, small group learning spaces and commons areas for large group learning

  • All new building systems — mechanical, electrical and plumbing

  • Safety enhancements including a new, secure entrance in the original tower along Barrington Road

These new and modern learning spaces are supporting our students as they develop the skills necessary to serve, lead and succeed now and in their futures.

This project also provides additional space to meet the needs of our growing school district. In the event that growth exceeds projections, each project has been designed to have a logical place for a classroom addition, if needed.
