UA Idea Day gives UAHS students, staff unique learning experience

Upper Arlington High School students experienced a day of learning unlike any other they’ve ever had at the inaugural UA Idea Day on February 9.

Through workshops and conversations in a variety of subject areas, UA Idea Day aimed to inspire all students as well as all teachers at the high school to create, innovate and dream.

Alice Finley, projects and program coordinator with the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, brought the idea of creating an ideas festival for all Upper Arlington High School students and staff to Laura Moore, instructional leader of the UAHS Research & Design Lab, after attending Chicago Ideas Week two years ago.

Finley, Moore, several students and community members worked together over the past several months to plan the day-long symposium — a first of its kind for a high school in central Ohio.

“Not only has UA Idea Day provided a number of unique, real-world learning challenges for the students who are planning the event,” Moore said, “but their efforts have produced a opportunity for their peers unlike any other we have ever had.”

Cindy Tang, a senior, was one of the students who worked over the past year to coordinate and plan Idea Day.

“We love this project and are passionate about sharing the power of learning and of creativity, innovation, and dreams,” she said of the planning committee. “For those in our school to see the passion of students and teachers culminate into something as big as UAID, I think, was inspiring in it of itself.”

Through UA Idea Day, Tang added, “Students realized the possibilities of the world, learned new ideas, and gained better understandings of themselves. Experiences otherwise unknown became realities, and learning found its way into many hearts.”

This unique opportunity was possible through funding from the Upper Arlington High School PTO and the Upper Arlington Education Foundation. In addition, many presenters donated their time that day.

“Due to the passion, generosity and dedication of our community, students were able to experience a day that might have changed their lives forever,” Moore said.
