Treasurer's Notes:

State Funding Update

After months of twists and turns in the state legislature, Ohio’s new biennium budget was finalized on June 30.  Throughout the process you may have seen several newspaper articles with charts showing how much state funding UA Schools stood to lose or gain.  The administration’s initial proposal had our district losing approximately $500,000 in fiscal year 2016, while the budget approved by the state legislature several months later had our district seeing an increase of approximately $400,000 in each of the next two years.

Despite all these ups and downs, we have ended up right where we started.  Our state funding will stay flat for the next two years.  How did we go from gaining significant funds to staying flat?  The budget approved by the legislature included something called a funding floor that was vetoed by the governor. That provision phased in a guaranteed that all public schools would receive at least as much per-pupil funding as the state sends to private and parochial schools.  Currently several Ohio districts, including Upper Arlington, receive significantly less per pupil than our neighboring private schools.
