Service-learning supports the mission of the district by providing engaging and relevant learning experiences.  These authentic experiences meet real community needs, have strong ties to the curriculum, and include meaningful preparation and reflection.

The Strategic Plan promotes the use of service-learning as a teaching strategy for 100% of our students every year.

  • Three of our buildings have the honor of being named National Service-learning Leader Schools: Hastings Middle School, Jones Middle School and Upper Arlington High School.

  • For over 10 years, Upper Arlington has had the distinction of being one of six service-learning model districts in Ohio.

  • In 2011, Upper Arlington received a Certificate of Recognition from the Ohio  Department of Education for its commitment to service-learning, one of only two districts in the state to receive this designation.

  • Each building has designated staff who serve as Service-learning Leaders.  These trained educators model high-quality service-learning with their own students and act as coaches for colleagues.

  • High-quality professional development in the form of graduate courses are offered to all staff members providing inspiration and knowledge about service-learning techniques.

  • In 2011, freshmen from UAHS received the State Farm National Service-learning Leadership Award for the Strides for Sudan project.

  • Update the first dot point to read: 64 of our high school students did over 13,000 hours of community service during 2013-2014 school year and received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Information about how high school students can receive this award can be found here (PDF).

  • Each middle school student contributes a minimum of 6 hours of service to the community.

  • Each student from the sophomore and junior class contributes a minimum of 6 hours of service to the community.

  • Each senior contributes a minimum of 15 hours of service as part of a Capstone Experience.

  • Each IB diploma graduate contributes a minimum of 150 hours of community service.
